MRPC Environmental Education Intern

This paid internship position at the Mill River Park Collaborative is for a college student majoring in Environmental Sciences, Natural Resource Conservation, Sustainability or another similar major. The main role of the intern is to assist the MRPC Programs Coordinator in the day-to-day operation of the Mill River Stewards Program. The Stewards Program is a summer-long program for Stamford high school students to learn about urban park stewardship, environmentalism, and careers in conservation.

Knowledge of contemporary environmental issues, native plant species, riparian ecosystems, and environmental justice is important. You will be working closely with the MRPC Programs and Land Care staff, as well as our summer high school interns. The ability to make sound decisions, lead by example, and willingness work in inclement weather (heat and rain) is crucial.

The internship runs from a flexible date in mid-May until the Stewards Program ends in the third week of August, and pays $11/hour. The Intern will be expected to work Monday through Thursday from 9am to 4pm, with the occasional Friday and/or Saturday. The Intern will join the MRPC staff about one month before the program starts in June in order to become familiar with the operation of Mill River Park, the staff, and the goals of the program. An extended absence is not acceptable.

Responsibilities:

o   Leading high school students in stewardship activities such as invasive plant removal, riverbank stabilization, litter cleanup, plant identification, plantings, etc.

o   Help design and deliver environmental education lessons

o   Help develop Stewards’ career materials (resumes, cover letters, etc)

o   Help make preparations for larger stewardship and conservation projects

o   Chaperone field trips such as the High Line and Central Park

o   Assisting with any other office work or field work that pertains to the program

Skills Required:

o   Ability and willingness to work outside for up to 6 hours in a day

o   Must live in Stamford or the surrounding area, or be willing and able to relocate

o   A background in Environmental Studies or a closely-related field is required

o   Experience using basic tools (shovels, saws, etc.) and ability to lift 50 lbs…Experience with power tools and driving a tractor isn’t required but would be helpful

o   We are looking for someone who is passionate about environmental stewardship and working with youth. A high energy level, organizational skills, teamwork, and the ability to communicate effectively are crucial!
